Jully Black

The Singer, SongWRITER, and Cultural Connector

So people from my lived experience in this country has been people fall in love with Jully Black, not Jully Black, who happens to be black.

Jully Black is a woman who wears many hats – she’s a singer, songwriter, actor, television personality, and most importantly, a game changer and cultural connector. She believes that she has manifested various opportunities, including hosting a comedy event for the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, through her live concerts, during which she hears as much laughter as she does singing.

Black’s journey towards physical fitness began when she was only 12, after the passing of her sister. Ever since then, she has been committed to using exercise not just for physical health, but also for mental wellbeing. As a Black woman, Black has spoken about the societal tendency to treat Black women as strong and resilient, which often leads to neglect of their mental and emotional wellbeing. This highlights the need for all women, regardless of their race, to take care of their mental health.

After over a decade away from the music industry due to personal challenges, which included a toxic relationship and taking care of her ill mother, Black released a new album in 2022. The advancements in technology have changed the way music is made and promoted, and Black has been able to utilise social media to directly reach out to her fans. Her story is inspiring and is proof that it’s never too late to get back on your feet and follow your dreams.

In 2023, Black performed the Canadian national anthem at the NBA All-Star game. Prior to the event, she made a conscious decision to change one word in the lyrics to better reflect the reality of living in Canada. She changed the line “our home and Native land” to “our home on Native land” This change caused some backlash, but Black saw it as an opportunity. She has since received an eagle feather and blanket from the assembly of First Nations in Ottawa for her positive move.

Black has always been vocal about her experience as a Black Canadian woman in the entertainment industry. As her profile grew, she began to notice the inequalities faced by black professionals seeking sponsorships and endorsements. This is something that needs to change, both in the Canadian entertainment industry and around the world.

Black’s story is one of perseverance, hard work, and determination. Her faith and unique perspective have helped her overcome the challenges in her life and find success, both personally and professionally. One of the key takeaways from her journey is the importance of using your voice to make a positive change in the world. Black is a game changer, and we can all learn something from her inspiring story.
